16th Nov.  Warrenton Springs
Waked at 3 A.M. Got
ready to march at daylight
Marched at 10 ¼ am through
Fayetteville. + Liberty to Bealton Sta.
on the Orange +  Alex. RR
Marched up the RR near Warrenton line(?).  camped about 8P.M.
A little muzzly rain at night
Dry + dusty some of the way
Marched 12 miles in an
easterly direction –
Have now drawn on 5 days
Reg. (exactly 20th) 3 ds. R.  of sugar
+ of coffee 2 of meat + 5 loaves
of HB.  95 lbs. due Pd 30 cts for meat
Dunn fill out on march yestr
day + has not come in –

– Marched from 7 till about 1
marched – at least 11 miles
through Falmouth past Fredbg.
+ camped on top of the table land

46 miles in 4 days –

20th  M. In camp – same place – [line break]
– Drew 1 days ration Fresh beef + Coffee
+ 1 box HB –
Rain all day – Mended stock
-ings  – made our 2 buttonholes in vest
– cut off one sleeve to overcoat – just button
on our coat pockets – washed all our
– Several shells sent acrop
the river in the morning
Sent #11 letter to Mary –
3 days ration sugar dye on this reg.

21st – Drew 3 boxes(?) HB.  1 days
ration Salt Pork – 2 day Sugar + Coff

Reed one from Herbert Brown
Cd(?) Bowman got letter from

21st  – Opposite Fredericksburg Va.
Gov. Andrew – containing one from
Mrs. Bigelow – stating that her
husband A.G. Bigelow was in Consumption.  – + asking the Gov(?)
to have him discharged.
Rained nearly all day making 3 days

22nd Rain over – same camp
– Drew 2 days rations C. S. F. Beef + enough
H. Bread to make up 4 days rations
– Sun out part of time
Went down to the rim – a mile
+ a half- to the R.R. bridge –
Saw a number of Rebs. –many of
them dreped in blue .  Sent No12 letter to Mary
– Reed Balt. Papers of today –
+ heard of the demanded surren
der of [illegible symbol].  Our supplies now come
from Bell Plain – on the Potomac
said to be only 7 miles from here
23rd Bell is not on the Potomac but on Aegina Creek

Services – Not very well –
Drew 1 days Rations S.C. HB, Pork + Ham
completing the 5 days reg. to 25th

24th Cold night – half inch of ice made
in dish near our tent.
Sun warm – no wind –
Reed letter #15 from Mary alone from
J.R.

25th Started on new reg. – for 69
men instead of 71 as is ought to have been
– drew 3 days ration sugar (lacking 3 lbs.)
Coffee + Pork + 4 boxes HB.
Weigh 14 lbs. shoes m – no equipments
Rain in night J.F.B. in tent

26th – Mud – not much rain
Review by Gen. Summer.
Drew 21 lbs. beans.
Finished  #13 to Mary
Doctor Dr.Tyler says we have no medicine
+ have never had a fit supply.

27th Nov. Opp. Fredericksburg Va
Pleasant day – About 10 a.m. Had
orders to pack + start for a new camp
– which is a quarter of a mile N.E.
– Got a fly tent – fixed in good shape

28th had Comp. Drill at 9 ½ a.m.
Drew 2 days rations Coffee + Sugar
+ Hard bread enough to make 5 day
rations – ½ days ration Salt Pork
Had orders to go on Picket at 3 P.M.

200 pickets from the river to the Bell
Plains road – a mile from Gen. Burnside
H.2. – Picket line is 3 ½ miles long
– I was stationed about 2 miles from
the river –Talked with Mr.
calling himself Union – No troops
man hear till our forces came here
last Spring. Fredericksburg
20 to 30-000 inhabitants – Used to be
good place for Flour, Sweet potatoes
+ c – Flour sells now for 20. Dols per []

28th Nov. Opp. Fredericksburg
-Nothing to sell here – land poor – some(?)
+ springy – land of same nature []
Bay. – clay + sand – few stones – all here
are – gnarty(?) – white + colored.
Up pretty near all night – had to
go out several times.-

29th Pleasant day –
Releived(?) about 3 P.M. by 79th N.Y.
– went back to camp by [] H. 2.
– saw the Pontoons – about a hundred
– while gone Co drew 1 ½s Ration of
Fresh beef – 2 days ration beans + rice.

30th Sunday – Pleasant – Heavy frost.
– Had inspection ^review by Col. Leasine(?)
– marched past him –
Had Inspection by Col. Novton(?)
Services (Brigade) at 1 P.M.
Chaplain of 45th spoke remarking
well about the war + the causes of
it + the sins yet to be repented of.

31st + the seasons for thankful
rep that nothing worse had come
upon us. – read the Pres. Order
regarding the Sabbath + swearing
Drep(?) Parade – first time
I have been out since came acrop the Pot. –
Heard firing down the River
– look 2 of Agers(?) frills(?) Gun Boats reported 3 miles below –
Drew 1 box HB. on tomorrous ration
Sagur of Co B. died

1st Dec. Pleasant day – Not very
well + so did not drill

Drew for Co ( 72 men) 17 lbs. C. 32 lbs. S

Loomph. + Ball. Drill + Drep. Parade – Sagur was buried with
military honors.

2nd Dec. Drew 2 days R. Pork – Bot 2 lbs. tea
113(?) – got in 100 of Leavitt(?) + gave him 1 lb. tea. (settled with
him ) Didn’t go to Comp. but did to Bat.
Drill + drep. Parade –

3d – Pleasant as usual
Wasn’t out to Comp. drill. But as Lt. Rd.
was sick took the Co out to Bat. drill +
D. Parade – 4th time our(?) drill 1st on D. P.

(except a few lbs.) S. + meat + for extra 3 ds. Ration

of beans Sent #14 to Mary, also letters to Capt.
Herbert + sick men – not out to drill
5th – Our log house was finished yes
terday all but chimney made that
today + had a fire started – good draft
Co (72 men) drew 4 boxes HB. 3 ds. Rat. C + S
17. Rice. Beans + Hog.
Reed letter from Mrs. P. + answered it +
sent certificate Surgeon who stated that
his disease was “Acute dysentery” Sent
also [] of clothing on [] $13.75

– Reed #16 from Mary + sent #15 –
These letters are to go to Nash by Chaplain(?)
– No Batt. drill or Drep Parade on acct of
Storm

6th Very cold night, snow on
Chaplain went to Washington
the ground this A.M. Warmer
after sun was up. – got our
chimney plastered inside + filled
it up some at backside

6th Dec. – Drew today 60 lbs. potatoes
some dessicated vegetable (first ^ of either since
we came out) also some vinegar + molasses(?)
– Took dose of pills (3) in AM.

7th Coldest night of the season-
snow hardly melted all day –
Sunday + nothing done –
except by the men in building
tents = report of a Con. man being
frozen to death last night.
Men are suffering from bad pants
+ shoes – + ought to be supplied
Read 7th + 21st [illegible crossed out word] long(?)

8th No drills: orders came to make
the tents comfortable – all hands
doing it – We made ours tighter
-Drew 2 days rations Sugar. Coffee
+ HB. Enough to complete 5 days ration
One days ration Fresh Beef + about
1 ¾ bin of potatoes.

of Wor.  to make a stout blue
fatigue coat + send to Mrs.
HSR Clinton + send the
bill by mail to me.
Wrote Mary to send the box.
Drew 2 ds. Ration of everything

10th – no Drills –
Fletcher of Co [] buried
Had Infection of Rig(?)
served out 3 days rations

11th Commanding com. at 5 am –

Firing from 10 to 12 very hot

11th Camp near Falmouth
The Eng. were fired on before
comp. the Center bridge + had
to leave it – Got it done during
day + troops croped
Our batteries were shelling the
town nearly all day + burnt
several houses.
35 reports in 30 seconds.
About sunset marched down
within ¾ of a mile of the river
+ then marched back to camp
Drew + served out 1 ds. ration of HB. S. + C.

marched nearly to the river +

Drew up on lowland under
the hill near gasworks

2 or 3 men were killed + several
wounded – About Sunset
we were moved up on the []

Slept in J. Andersons house
Drew + served out at daylight 1 days ration(?)

13th Sat had orders to be ready
at daylight

Formed line about 8 ¾
marched off to lift – left in
front + formed line of battle
at 9 ½ – About 9 ¾ hours(?)

-menced on our left –
(By campfire 9 PM.) Battle
lasted till 6 PM. The last
firing on the Right close
under a Reb. Battery

top of the platau(?) just below
a ridge-6(?) hap(?) of 82 P.V.

called at 2 ½ a.m. formed line(?) +
marched off about 3- marched nearly
south to the road then turned to

of yesterday – Got 1 ds. ration 6.
S.HB + cooked beef- Slight fir

Gas Works. – Supposed the morning that
we were going to the front – At 9 ½  it was said.

just before sunset we march
ed back to our place in the valley.
But very little firing today.
Sent letter to Josie written 11th(?)+
#17 to Mary, written on the wharf-
We stacked arms, made coffee +
spread our blankets on the ground.

15th Remained all day in same spot-
Heard no musketing(?)  but consid
erable cannoning about 9A.M. + 3P.M.
Our folks said to be planting(?) heavy
seige guns on the other bank of the river
Reed letters #19 + 20 (11th Dec) from Mary + one
from Cap.(?) Bailey at Balt.
Formed line at 9P.M. just after having
orders to makes ourselves comfortable(?)
for the night.- Marched to Firedly(?)
halted at the Andersons house –then mar
ched back to gas works + after 12 min.(?)
after various counter marching
Croped the bridge (covered in dirt)

16th Camp Opp. Fredbg.
+ back to camp –turned in with
out making any fires. I was
waked about 5 ½  A.M. by the rain.
Got over fly + pitched in
About 9 took down the fly + put up
our A tent. Drew + served out 2 days rations
not much cannoning(?)- All the
bridges up- our troops said to
be all acrop again.
Haven Surgeon of 15th + Fuller Chapl.(?) of
16th killed in Fredbg. Some frost
Sipels(?) Corps is said to have all come up.
Sent #18 to Mary – by Mr. Parker

17th Pleasant day- The 12th the
ground froze at night, but there
was no frost the 13th, 14th, or 15th.
Drew one days [] Fresh beef
¾ ration potatoes 4ds ration rice
2ds beans 1 square of des. vegetables.

18th– Reg. Inspection at 2PM
Drew 2 days ration HB.S+C.+ 1 of Fresh beef
Sarg(?) King +15 men went to [] for
clothing- returned about 10 PM- Cooked the
beef to serve out tomorrow morning.
