George Bailey Letters

The letters within this collection were written by George Bailey of Andover to Silvanus Lovejoy of Lowell.

George Bailey was a private in Co. A, 26th Regimental Massachusetts Infantry. He first enlisted at age 18 in 1861 for three years, then re-enlisted in 1864. His enlistment papers say that he was born in Andover and is by occupation a shoemaker. These letters were written primarily from New Orleans, until 1864, then from Carrolton, Morganza Bend (Louisiana), a camp near Berryville, Bermuda Hundreds (Virginia), Georgetown Heights, and Shenandoah Valley. Bailey was killed on 19 September 1864 in Winchester, Virginia “on the field, by gunshot wounds received in battle.”
