4th Nov. Near Upperville Va
Upperville is this side up the gap –
Paris is near the gap (Ashby Gap)
Dress – 12 prs. Socks 2 Canteens
23 d. [] Co
Ashby or Paris Gap is 6 or 8 miles
west of us – a Pike running through it – to Alex.   41 miles from here
the Manapas Gap R. R. runs
through a gap called by the
people here  Ashbys gap –
This is 14 miles further on
– A dirt rode goes through
by the side of the R. R.
– Ribds were here yesterday
– A Brigade at least – of Cavalry passed this A. M. towards Ash. Gap
Drew 1 days rations E.B. FB.  Sugar. Coffee
– got a wall tent + pitched it
Ricd. – #12 letter from Mary
Heard cannon over the mountains

5th Nov. Started 4¼ A. M. on the ^Pike road to
Alex. Went 3 miles + then turned
square to the right (south) – marched

5th Nov.                                Springfield
about 10 miles through Rectortown(?)
to the Manassas R. R. – Piedmont
Corp. Parker of Co  D died+ was buried

Camped south of RR. Facing south
Pitched tents (we had a Fly) got straw + had a good camp
Fresh Pork + Poultry plenty.
Drew 1 days rations F. B. Sugar + coffee
Rained a little in night

6th Drew 2 days rations FB.
Started 8½ am.  Marched back to
Rectortown, + then on to Salem, crop
-ing the RR. A mile or two before en
-tering S.  Marched on in a Souther
ly direction – Burnside paped to
the front in P.M. –

Marched 15 to 18 miles + camped
at Orlean.
Co T [] S. went on Picket (my first
experience) Pretty cold – but had
2 or 3 hours good sleep.
